Optimizing the use of cryopreserved genetic resources for animal populations in breeding and conservation

How can cryopreserved animal genetic resources be used? Simulation work has shown that the use of cryopreserved genetic resources can not only slow down the loss of genetic diversity in populations, but also support changes in breeding objectives. The use of these resources varies according to the objective of the population manager. This study provides practical recommendations for different management scenarios.

The GIS IBISA has just published “Garder l'élevage au frais, pour ne perdre rien du vivant” (“Keeping livestock farming cool, so as not to lose any of the living”), reminding us that CRB-Anim, the animal pillar of the RARe infrastructure, brings together biobanks that keep the genetic and genomic resources of a multitude of animal species raised in France in cold storage. National biodiversity under high protection to respond to crises and safeguard the future.

The program includes news and progress reports from each species group, as well as time for discussions on current projects.

Some sixty people (breeders, R&D engineers from breeding companies, researchers and technicians from institutes...) took part in the launch of the RESIGEN France2030 program, organized by the Syndicat des sélectionneurs avicoles et aquacoles français (SYSAAF) at the INRAE Val-de-Loire center in Nouzilly (37).

What samples do we store?

Around 530,000 biological samples (semen, embryos, cells, tissues, DNA, RNA) from farm and companion animals are already stored in the biological resource centers (BRCs) of the CRB-Anim network: ruminants, pigs, equines, rabbits, dogs, cats, poultry, farmed fish, molluscs and insects - a total of 22 species.

CRB-Anim brings together 10 members from public research organizations (INRAE, CNRS, IFREMER), higher education establishments (Université de Rennes, VETAGRO SUP, ONIRIS), professional partners (IFIP, IDELE, IFCE) and a private platform and company, ANTAGENE.

Biological resources concern domestic animal species (farm animals and pets) bred in France and their wild relatives (mammals, birds, fish, shellfish, etc.).  The genomic collections of breeders' associations or selection companies are housed within the CRB-Anim BRCs. CRB-Anim brings together two types of collections: cryobanks, "reproductive" collections preserving semen or embryos in liquid nitrogen (-196°C), and "genomic" collections preserving blood, tissue or DNA from the same animals in laboratory freezers.  Research into genetic diversity, breeding and biomedical models combines these characterized biological samples with access to cryopreservation tools for biological resources.

CRB-Anim is the animal pillar of the AgroBRC-RARe National Research Infrastructure

AgroBRC-RARe is a research infrastructure included in the national roadmap that brings together five networks of CRBs conserving genetic, genomic and biological resources assembled and characterized by research on domestic animals, model or cultivated plants, wild species related to domesticated species, forest trees, microorganisms of agronomic or agri-food interest, and environmental microorganisms and organisms. https://www.agrobrc-rare.org/
